Terms a Player Should Know When Playing at Home for Fun or in a Tournament.

Glossary of Terms:

The terminology for Backgammon is quit vast, but there are 6 terms you need to know to help you form a good Backgammon strategy and they are:
  1. Anchor :
    An anchor is when a player has 2 or more checkers on any point in the opposing inner board. Every player starts of with an Anchor on the opponents first point.
  2. Backgammon :
    besides being the name of the game it is also when a player removes all his checkers while his opponent still has a checker in your inner board or on the bar.
  3. Bar :
    The bar is the divider separating the inner and outer halves of the board. Generally this is where a checker is put when it has been hit.
  4. Bear off :
    This is when a player has all his checkers in there inner board and removes a checker.. Once you bear off your last checker you have won.
  5. Closed :
    A closed board is when a player has anchors an all there points in the inner board. Closed out is when a player has a checker on the bar and can not return it to play because his player has a closed board
  6. Inner Board :
    The Inner Board is the quarter of the board you need to get all you checkers before you can bear off.
These are the 6 terms you should know when playing backgammon for fun or in a tournament. They will help you for a winning strategy. There are many other terms a player should know especially if you want to play in a tournament. They can be found on many different sites on the internet.
